Late autumn 1914 would see opposing forces on the Western Front trying to outflank one another in a series of battles north towards the English Channel. Stalemate and the harsh realities of trench warfare would follow as both sides ‘dug in’ during the latter months of 1914 and the war that was supposed to be over by Christmas looked as though it would last well into 1915.
After months of bitter fighting and atrocious autumn and winter weather both sides were ready for some respite. Or were they?
On this tour we will be looking at the events leading up to the Christmas Truce and will focus on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 1914 and look at how the lull in hostilities was viewed through the eyes of the soldier on the ground at the time. With an in-depth and comprehensive cases study of two casualties during the truce, we will look to examine what really happened along the British sector over the Christmas period 1914.
What were the driving factors that brought about this extraordinary event?

Really good balance looking at the intense activity in the run up to Christmas 1914 and then the implications for the 25th itself, with plenty of individual stories and supporting graphics. The fact it covers the full British front underlines the differences between formations and highlights the extent of research. Had time allowed, it would have been interesting to know a little more about the myths that have evolved since and why. Overall however, the usual excellent depth you’d expect from Virtual Tours.

As good as any Battlefield Tour you have ever experienced all from the comfort of your favourite armchair. The use of technology coupled with the high standard of presentation truly brings to life aspects of history which books alone simply don’t touch.

Excellent presentation from Paul and Dan. Various elements of the Christmas Truce were nicely addressed. The football story introduced observations I had not thought about! Thank you. Each of these programs that I have attended have all been top notch and of the highest professional and academic standards. Keep up the good work.

Fascinating and most interesting. Everyday is a school day. Thank you for shining a light on some of the myths of the Christmas Day Truce and telling some of the heartfelt stories that happened.
Many thanks to Paul, Dan and all involved with Battle Guide Virtual Tours.
