Description

What a difference a year makes! After being (wrongly) criticised for their performance at Mametz Wood on the Somme, the 38th Welsh Division would suffer the ignominy of being largely left out of the fighting for a year. Their chance for redemption, if they needed it, would come on the opening day of the infamous 3rd Battle of Ypres, on Pilkem Ridge. It was here, and in this action, that Douglas Haig would later write that the men ‘reached the highest level of soldierly achievement,’ where the 38th Division ‘met and broke to pieces a German Guard Division.’  High praise indeed.

Join the virtual tour as we follow in the footsteps of men like the poet Hedd Wyn and hear from those that took part in what was the outstanding achievement of the opening phase of this battle, the capture of Pilkem Ridge.

Another excellent tour from Rory, who always gives a real human
view of this remarkable battlefield.

Excellent. Thanks very much. I have crossed much of this ground many times, followed the 55th Division at Pilckem Ridge further to the south, and visited the Welsh memorial but never systematically followed the course of the 38th Division on 31 July 1917. I shall revisit in July. Entirely right to emphasis the importance of SS 143; its principles are the hallmark of this battle and are found in many of the divisions – honed and improved with delegation to platoon commanders, it was the cornerstone of future success

This tour gives a great idea of what happened on the ground, interspersed with personal stories. One of the best ones I’ve seen.

I like how you guys break these into smaller engagements which are more digestible. This gets you into 3rd Ypres very completely.
