What a difference a year makes! After being (wrongly) criticised for their performance at Mametz Wood on the Somme, the 38th Welsh Division would suffer the ignominy of being largely left out of the fighting for a year. Their chance for redemption, if they needed it, would come on the opening day of the infamous 3rd Battle of Ypres, on Pilkem Ridge. It was here, and in this action, that Douglas Haig would later write that the men ‘reached the highest level of soldierly achievement,’ where the 38th Division ‘met and broke to pieces a German Guard Division.’ High praise indeed.
Join the virtual tour as we follow in the footsteps of men like the poet Hedd Wyn and hear from those that took part in what was the outstanding achievement of the opening phase of this battle, the capture of Pilkem Ridge.
