Description

In the northern part of the Somme battlefields on the infamous 1st July 1916, the hard fighting 36th (Ulster) Division, made up entirely of volunteers, achieved one of the biggest break ins on a morning marked by disaster. The Ulsters were the only Division on the northern part of the battlefield that day to reach the German 2nd line in strength. With innovation and astonishing bravery, these men managed to penetrate and capture perhaps the most formidable German defensive position on the Somme – the Schwaben Redoubt, only to have to relinquish it later that evening. This tour, following in the footsteps of the 36th Division, will present an overview of this incredible action, outlining the success of the advance and events that led to the awarding of 4 V.C’s.  It will also highlight the problems it faced and outline reasons why, at terrible cost, they were forced to give up all of the precious ground they had captured that day.

A well done presentation by Rory Stephens of the outstanding display of courage and grit of the 36th Ulster Division in the attack at Thiepval during the July 1st Somme Offensive. The crisp narration, overlay of trench maps, drone footage and google map images complemented by actual accounts made for a powerful analysis of this most eventful of days during the Great War. Kudos to Battle Guides for another brilliant presentation. Wilioam Schuber, Oradell, NJ USA

A really fascinating and exciting tour, expertly related. the drone footage was also superb and helped to explain the progress of the battle as it unfolded and to give a very illuminating idea of the relief of the ground over which it was fought and the sight lined from the perspective of both attackers and defenders. Many thanks, James, from Inverness

Histories well told. I am learning so much more about the experiences my grandfather would have encountered. Thank you

History powerfully brought to life by Rory Stephens through vivid storytelling, a great mix of drone footage, detailed maps (with new technology showing trench lines!) and personal stories. Good stuff, this.
