Following on from the infamous 1st July 1916 the British Army drew breath across the Somme front. There was no question that the large-scale offensives would be renewed, but where, to what extent and to what effect remained very much unanswered questions. When on 14th July 1916 the BEF stepped on to the Bazentin Ridge and caught a glimpse of the dominant feature that was High Wood, they were not to know that the ground separating the two would in fact become one of the most bloodily contested spots in British military history.
This unique tour, pioneering a new style of virtual battlefield exploration, will not follow one action on one day, but rather explore one small stretch of ground across the entire course of the Somme campaign. Join historians Clive Harris and Ryan Schwartz as they lead you on a virtual walking tour between the village of Bazentin-le-Petit and High Wood, exploring that vital ground and some of the many incredible stories it has to offer a century on.
