US Navy Admiral “Bull” Halsey famously wrote: ‘Before Guadalcanal, the enemy advanced at his pleasure. After Guadalcanal, he retreated at ours.’ On 7 August 1942, thousands of US Marines stormed ashore on Japanese controlled Guadalcanal as part of the first Allied offensive of the Pacific War, setting into motion the savage six-month long struggle for the island. Key to that fighting was Bloody Ridge, also known as Edson’s Ridge, and arguably the most significant piece of ground associated with the entire Pacific War. The ridge held a commanding view of the Island’s vital airfield; whoever controlled the airfield, controlled Guadalcanal.

In September and October American marines and soldiers fought bitterly for control of the ridge in two iconic battles which this Virtual Tour will explore through use of the latest technology and the words of those who were there.
