We start at **Notre-Dame-de-Lorette**, France's largest military cemetery and the remarkable Ring of Remembrance, taking in the enormous scale of France's sacrifice and looking out across much of the ground that will shape the first half of the tour. We explore the ground of the 1915 offensives and France's attempts to break through the German front, before moving to **Neuville-Saint-Vaast and the Labyrinth**, one of the most fiercely contested corners of the Artois battlefield, to discuss the brutal realities of trench warfare and close-quarter fighting. We explore selected positions on the **French Somme battlefield** — potentially Fay, Soyécourt, Frise, Dompierre and Belloy-en-Santerre — examining the French attack of 1 July 1916 and comparing French methods and results with their British allies further north. It's a battlefield remarkably little visited by British tours. We then visit the **Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne**, one of the finest WWI museums anywhere, whose international approach opens up French civilian society, wartime culture, propaganda and the changing relationship between front and home front — before considering the enormous demographic and social cost of two years of industrialised war. We begin at the **Butte de Vauquois**, one of the Western Front's most extraordinary landscapes, where French and German troops fought an underground war of mines and counter-mines beneath a destroyed village — then on to **Mort-Homme and Hill 304**, the devastated heights west of the Meuse, to explain Falkenhayn's strategy, French defensive methods and the staggering human cost of the campaign. Today explores its greatest crisis — and the remarkable transformation that followed. We explore the **Chemin des Dames**, battlefield of the disastrous Nivelle Offensive of April 1917, and a special visit beneath it into the extensive tunnel and quarry systems of the extraordinary subterranean battlefield occupied by French and German soldiers. Using the ground itself, we examine the 1917 mutinies — what happened when sections of the exhausted French Army refused further futile offensives, and how Pétain restored discipline while changing the way the army fought and cared for its men. At **Berry-au-Bac**, birthplace of French armour, we look at the Schneider and Saint-Chamond tanks that entered battle during the Nivelle Offensive, the problems they encountered, and the road to the far more successful Renault FT. At **Belleau**, remembered principally as an iconic action of the US Marine Corps, we place that famous fight back into its wider French operational context. At **Soissons** we visit the battlefield of the Franco-American counterstroke of 18 July 1918, launched with hundreds of tanks against the exposed flank of the German Marne salient — a decisive turning point in the war's momentum. We finish at **Compiègne**, the clearing at Rethondes where the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918, closing with a discussion of how profoundly the French Army was transformed between 1914 and 1918 — and why France's contribution to Allied victory has become so surprisingly poorly understood outside France. If you’re unsure or have any questions, feel free to contact us directly. ###### When is the tour, and where does it start and end?  The tour starts on the morning of **Tuesday 18th May 2027** and ends on the evening of **Sunday 23rd May 2027**. It starts and ends at **Ebbsfleet International Train Station**, just 20 minutes from central London by train.  ###### Can I join from Europe or overseas? Yes. Many guests travel from mainland Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and beyond. The easiest option is to arrange your travel to London and meet the group at **Ebbsfleet** on Day 1. If you’re arriving independently, we recommend building in a little extra time the day before in case of travel delays. ###### Can I join the tour in Arras or Calais instead?  Yes. If meeting at Ebbsfleet isn't possible, you can join the group in **Calais** on the morning of Day 1, catching the full day's touring from Notre-Dame-de-Lorette onward. If that's not workable either, joining in **Arras** at the start of Day 2 is also an option. Please contact us in advance so we can arrange logistics.  ###### Is this suitable for partners or non-specialists? (Your partner’s idea?) Absolutely. Many guests join as couples with different levels of knowledge. The tour is friendly, well-paced, and full of human stories, with free time built in and no obligation to visit every site on every day — so you can dip in and out and still have a brilliant week.       ###### I have a relative who served! — can we include something related to them? Yes! We love to do that. Let us know a little detail and we’ll see what we can do. ###### I’m travelling alone - is that normal? Yes. Many visitors join alone. There is some walking, but nothing particularly strenuous. A decent standard of mobility is suitable. Full balance due **10 weeks before departure**. ###### Is there support before the tour? Yes.
